Ceneri Base Tunnel: last blast at Vigana

A further important phase in construction of the Ceneri Base Tunnel has come to an end. Today, Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at 2:50 pm, the last blast in the north drive at Viga-na took place. Six hundred-and-seventy metres of the 15.4-kilometres-long Ceneri Base Tun-nel have been excavated by blasting from Vigana. Lining of the tunnel will start at the beginning of 2012."Although excavation work from the north portal at Vigana and the south portal at Vezia is now complete, work on realisation of the Ceneri Base Tunnel continues at full speed. To date, around 40 % of the 39.8-kilometres-long tunnel system have been excavated", explained Walter Bernardi, Chief Construction Officer for the Ceneri Base Tunnel at AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., after the last blast.Work on the north...

New guided tours of the NRLA construction sites in Ticino

Every year, the construction sites of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. attract thousand of visitors from Switzerland and abroad. Starting a few weeks ago, the Gotthard South Information Centre at Pollegio now offers two new guided tours: at Biasca, a visit to the railway systems for the Gotthard Base Tunnel, and at Sigirino, an underground visit to the Ceneri Base Tunnel.
The focal point of the first guided tour are the railway systems of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Visitors have the opportunity to travel by train over the test route in the Bodio section. During the ride, they can view the almost finished tunnel with the permanent track. They can also visit an already equipped cross-passage which contains everything that is needed for later operation with high-speed trains.
The second guided...

Installation of the railway systems in the north has begun

Installation of the railway systems at the north portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel has begun. In the next four years, a large part of the railway infrastructure, such as railway tracks and catenaries, as well as the electric power supply , telecommunication and safety systems, will be installed from Erstfeld. Work throughout the Gotthard Base Tunnel is progressing rapidly. The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be ready for scheduled train services in 2016.
Since autumn 2010, work on the Railway Installation Site (North) at Erstfeld has been progressing at full speed. On the approximately 65,000-square-metres site, large halls, workshops and offices have been erected as the logistical base for installation. From September 2011, installation of the railway infrastructure systems in the north of...

Gotthard Base Tunnel to be operational from 2016

The Federal Office of Transport (FOT), AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd (ATG), and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB AG) will do everything possible to make the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) operational from December 2016. All work in the GBT and on the approach lines will be in support of this goal.
ATG as constructor of the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) as future operator have coordinated their timetables. They plan to start scheduled train services through the GBT from the end of 2016. Together with FOT as orderer and supervisory authority, a detailed analysis was performed of the advantages and disadvantages that making the GBT operational one year earlier than planned in 2016 would bring. Based on this analysis, FOT regards the start of scheduled train services through...

Gotthard Base Tunnel: Driving complete

On March 23, 2011, the miners excavated the last metres of rock in the west tube between Faido and Sedrun. Around five months after the final breakthrough in the east tube, both single-track tunnels of the Gotthard Base Tunnel are therefore completely driven over a continuous length of 57 kilometres.
The tunnel boring machine from Faido broke through into the Sedrun section at 12:20 pm. The miners of the two sections could again shake hands. "With the end of excavation under the Gotthard, a further important milestone has been reached in the construction of the world's longest railway tunnel", says Renzo Simoni, CEO of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd.

Successful collaboration between AlpTransit Gotthard and the environmental protection organisations

The collaboration between AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. and the environmental protection organisations with objection rights is working well. This was the conclusion reached by the Swiss Environmental Organisations (USO), represented by Dr. Martin Furter, following his visit to the construction sites of the Ceneri Base Tunnel on October 29, 2010. The USO acknowledge that the collaboration results in ATG giving a high priority to environmental protection in the planning and execution phases.
For many years, the Swiss environmental protection organisations have regularly visited the construction sites that are operated by AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. for the NRLA project. These visits allow the national environmental protection organisations (Pro Natura, Rheinaubund, Schweizer Heimatschutz SHS,...

Surveyors achieve great accuracy

Masterly surveying performance in the world's longest railway tunnel: only eight centimetres horizontally and one centimetre vertically were the deviations at the final breakthrough of the Gotthard Base Tunnel on October 15, 2010. At a professional conference held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, some 300 surveying experts from Switzerland, Germany and Austria paid tribute to the precision that was achieved.
The focus was on the challenges that are presented to geomatics, and particularly surveying, by a major project such as the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Hilmar Ingensand, Professor of Engineering Geodesy, outlined the huge developments that have taken place in the sensors and methods used in surveying in the last 20 years. He emphasised the interrelatedness...

Final breakthrough of the longest railway tunnel in the world

World record on the Gotthard: The longest railway tunnel in the world has become a reality. On 15 October 2010 in the east tunnel, 30 km from the north portal and 27 km from the south portal, the final breakthrough of the Gotthard took place. At about 14:30, the tunnel boring machine, drilling from Faido, broke through the last metre of rock on the route to Sedrun.
The tunnel breakthrough was highly accurate. At 8 cm horizontally and 1 cm vertically, the deviation was very small. In his speech, Federal Councillor Moritz Leuenberger expressed pleasure, but was also moved by this important milestone on the Gotthard: “This breakthrough is a symbol of what policy can do, when we make it together,” he said. The new base tunnel will make Swiss – and also European – transport policy more...
