Installation of the railway infrastructure systems has begun

By the north portal of the Ceneri Base Tunnel in the east tube, installation of the railway infrastructure systems has begun. During the course of the next years, the 15.4-kilometres-long base tunnel between Camorino and Vezia will be equipped with the railway infrastructure systems such as the track, overhead conductor, tractive and general electric-power supply, telecommunication and safety systems as well as control systems. In 2020 the Ceneri Base Tunnel will be ready for scheduled train services.

Since autumn 2016, work on the railway systems installation site at Camorino has been progressing at full speed. On the approximately 60,000-square-metres site, control systems, halls, workshops and offices have been erected as the logistical base for installation of the railway infrastructure systems.

Installation of the railway track

At Vigana, by the north portal of the Ceneri Base Tunnel in the east tube, installation of the railway infrastructure systems has begun with laying of the first section of ballastless track. Since the work began, two hundred metres of track have already been laid. Their quality-control tests are now being performed. When these have been completed, the track-installation specialists can continue with installation of the ballastless track in the direction of the south portal at Vezia. Also in the west tube, work will soon begin on laying an auxiliary track. At peak times, up to 200 people will be involved in installing the railway infrastructure systems in the Ceneri Base Tunnel.

Electro-mechanical equipment

Laying of the track will be followed by mounting of the overhead conductor and catenary in the ceiling of the tunnel and installation of the electrical systems for the power supply to the railway systems as well as to other tunnel-specific equipment and the telecommunication, control and safety systems. Test operation will start in the spring of 2020 under the leadership of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. The complex interaction of all the systems in the Ceneri Base Tunnel will then be tested. The subsequent trial operation will take place under the principal responsibility of Swiss Federal Railways. According to the construction programme, the Ceneri Base Tunnel will be ready for scheduled train services in December 2020.

 

Four lots for the railway infrastructure systems For installation of the railway infrastructure systems in the Ceneri Base Tunnel, AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd has awarded four lots:

Railway Infrastructure Systems & Logistics Lot The Mons Ceneris Consortium (led by Mancini&Marti AG, Bellinzona; Marti Contractors Ltd., Moosseedorf; Marti Tunnelbau AG, Moosseedorf; Pizzarotti SA - Impresa Generale Costruzioni, Bellinzona; Pizzarotti & C. S.p.A. - Impresa Costruzioni, Parma; GCF S.p.A.– Generali Costruzioni Ferroviarie, Grottaglie; Gefer S.p.A., Rome) is responsible for the planning, supply, installation and commissioning of the railway track (ballastless track inside the tunnel, ballasted track in the open-air sections) and points in the Ceneri Base Tunnel. AMC is also responsible for the set-up, operation and removal of the installations site at Camorino as well as the entire transport and handling logistics for construction of the railway infrastructure systems in the Ceneri Base Tunnel and on the new overground section to the north.

Railway Infrastructure Systems & Overall Coordination Lot The CPC Consortium (led by Cablex AG, Berne; Porr Suisse AG, Altdorf; Società ltaliana per Condotte d'Acqua S.p.A., Rome; LGV Impresa Costruzioni SA, Bellinzona; Cossi Costruzioni S.p.A., Sondrio) is responsible for the planning, supply, installation and commissioning of the railway infrastructure equipment (tractive power supply 16.7 Hz; general power supply 50 Hz and cabling; landline and radio telephone network) of the Ceneri Base Tunnel including the new overground section to the north and the railway systems buildings at Vigana and Vezia, as well as the overall coordination between all of the companies involved. In addition, CPC is responsible for the set-up, operation and removal of the stationary infrastructure on the installations site at Camorino as well as the set-up, operation and removal of the installations site at Vezia.

Tunnel Control Systems Lot The Tunnelleittechnik ALU Company (Nokia Schweiz, Zurich) is responsible for the planning, supply, installation and commissioning of the tunnel control systems for the newly built section of the Ceneri Base Tunnel including integration of the existing tunnel control and related systems of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. This will ensure the creation of an overall tunnel control system for the Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels which is monitored and controlled from the Control Centre (South) at Pollegio.

Safety Systems Lot The Sicherungsanlagen TRSS Company (Thales Rail Signalling Solutions AG, Zurich) is responsible for the planning, supply, installation and commissioning of the safety systems including the railway infrastructure systems of the Ceneri Base Tunnel along with the new overground sections to the north and south and their integration into the systems of Swiss Federal Railways. This will ensure the creation of an overall safety system for the Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels which, like the tunnel control system, is monitored and controlled from the Control Centre (South) at Pollegio.
