Award of Ceneri Base Tunnel railway infrastructure systems

At its meeting held on August 12, 2013, the Board of Directors of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. awarded the contract for the railway infrastructure systems of the Ceneri Base Tunnel. The "Railway Infrastructure Systems and Overall Coordination" lot is awarded to the CPC consortium. The "Track and Logistics" lot goes to the Mons Ceneris consortium. Installation of the railway infrastructure systems will begin at the end of 2016. The Ceneri Base Tunnel is scheduled to open for commercial operations in December 2019.

Tenders for the "Railway Infrastructure Systems and Overall Coordination" of the Ceneri Base Tunnel were received from four consortia. The tenders were rigorously examined and evaluated according to the Swiss Federal Law on Public Procurement. After evaluation against all the criteria for the award, the tender submitted by the consortium that was chosen by the Board of Directors of Alp Transit Gotthard Ltd. to receive the contract, CPC, was both economically and financially the least expensive. The consortium is composed of the companies cablex AG (CH), PORR Suisse AG (CH) / PORR Bau GmbH (A) and Condotte (I) / Cossi (I) / LGV (CH).

The "Railway Infrastructure Systems and Overall Coordination" lot is for the installation of both single-track tunnel tubes each with a length of 15.4 km as well as the adjoining overground sections to the north and south that link to the existing railway network. The railway infrastructure installations that have been awarded comprise the electricity supply and cabling systems for lighting and power, overhead power line and switching systems, tunnel control systems, data networks and operational communications. The lot also includes overall coordination of installation of the railway infrastructure systems with the interfaces to the other railway infrastructure equipment. The contract value of the lot is around CHF 138 million (including not yet initiated options).

Tenders for the "Track and Logistics" lot of the Ceneri Base Tunnel were received from five consortia. The tender submitted by the contracted Mons Ceneris consortium, comprising the companies Mancini&Marti SA (CH), Marti Contractors Ltd. (CH), Marti Tunnelbau AG (CH), Pizzarotti SA (CH), Pizzarotti&C. S.p.A. (I), GCF S.p.A. (I) and Valditerra Lavori Ferroviari S.p.A. (I), was both economically and financially the least expensive.

The "Track and Logistics Lot" is for the installation of the ballastless track in both single-track tunnel tubes each with a length of 15.4 km as well as construction of the conventional ballasted track with the necessary points and drives outside the portals to link to the existing railway network. However, the lot also includes extensive temporary services for the Ceneri Base Tunnel such as logistics, transport, workshops and storage halls. The contract value is around CHF 96.4 million (including not yet initiated options).

Installation of the railway infrastructure systems through the north portal will start at the end of 2016. Installation, testing, commissioning and extensive test runs will take around three years. Operation of the Ceneri Base Tunnel with scheduled train services is planned to start in December 2019.
