Construction Site Open Days at Sedrun and Erstfeld Cancelled

The open day on the Sedrun construction site of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd planned for Saturday, June 10, 2006, will not take place. The open day has been cancelled because safety and constructional considerations do not allow visitors to be hoisted down the 800 metres deep shaft and the expectations of many visitors can therefore not be fulfilled.

The planned open day on the Erstfeld construction site that was scheduled for Saturday, October 21, 2006, will also not take place. It had been intended to show visitors the tunnel boring machine being assembled above ground. However, an objection by a construction consortium regarding the award by AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd of the contract for the Erstfeld tunnel construction lot (Lot 151) is causing delay. Assembly of the tunnel boring machine will therefore not have started by the date of the planned open day.

It is planned to hold open days again on the construction sites at Sedrun and Erstfeld next year.
In the coming months, up-to-date information on the NRLA project is provided by a special exhibition at the Museum of Civil Engineering in the Hänggiturm at Ennenda, in the canton of Glarus. With models, exhibits, rock samples, films and posters, construction of the NRLA through the Lötschberg and Gotthard is fascinatingly described with comprehensive explanations of the planning process, tunnel driving and supporting methods, and installation of the railway systems.
