Last blast in the Canton of Uri

On September 22, 2010, the last blast in the northern section of the Gotthard Base Tunnel took place. The miners of the Gotthard Base Tunnel North consortium blasted the last metres of rock in the branch-off construction of the Uri Underground Route Long in the Erstfeld-Amsteg section. The excavation and driving work in the Canton of Uri has thus come to an end after 11 years.

The first blast for the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the  Canton of Uri took place in November 1999. In the last 11 years, the miners have excavated around 46 kilometres of tunnel, cross-galleries, access adits and construction shafts for the Gotthard Base Tunnel. By the end of 2012, the concrete shell structure in the Erstfeld-Amsteg section will be complete, and both single-track tunnels will be ready for installation of the railway infrastructure systems.
