With a simple ceremony on May 31, 2016, responsible individuals of the construction contractors and engineering consultants, as well as of the overall constructing company, AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd, along with relatives, remembered those who lost their lives during construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. At the north portal in Erstfeld, a bronze memorial plaque with the names of those who died was unveiled.
In the afternoon of May 31, 2016, near the north portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel at Erstfeld, around 50 people gathered for a memorial service. The simple ceremony was led by Martin Kopp, Vicar General for Central Switzerland, and Reinhard Eisner, Vicar of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Uri. Renzo Simoni, Chief Executive Officer, AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd, honoured those who died. The traffic was briefly halted, the names of the deceased were read out and a bronze memorial plaque with their names was unveiled.
Between 2002 and 2012, nine people lost their lives while constructing the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Four came from Germany, three from Italy, one from South Africa and one from Austria. The fatal accidents occurred on the NRLA construction sites at Amsteg (1), Sedrun (2), Faido (3) and Bodio (3).
