Work on the Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels is on course. Inside the Gotthard Base Tunnel, in both tunnel tubes between Erstfeld and Sedrun, the ballastless railway track has been laid. In total, more than 40 percent of the railway systems have been installed. Pilot operation between the south portal at Bodio and Faido will start on schedule in December 2013 - a further important milestone towards the world's longest railway tunnel becoming operational in 2016. In the Ceneri Base Tunnel, more than 60 percent has already been excavated.
Laying of the ballastless railway track in the Gotthard Base Tunnel is progressing rapidly. Today in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, travel on the permanent track is already possible in both tunnel tubes between Erstfeld and Sedrun (around 20 km). Work on the ballastless track is now continuing on from Sedrun to Faido. Following after the track, the overhead conductors are being installed in the tunnel tubes. In total, more than 40 percent of the railway systems in the Gotthard Base Tunnel have been installed. In parallel with installation of the railway systems, final work is being completed on the Gotthard Base Tunnel structure.
In the west tube of the Gotthard Base Tunnel between the south portal at Bodio and Faido, preparations for pilot operation are in progress. From December 2013 on the around 16-kilometres-long section that has already been completely equipped with railway infrastructure systems, test runs will take place at up to 230 km/h. "This phase is very important for punctual commissioning", explains Renzo Simoni, Chief Executive Officer of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. "It will allow the complex interplay of all railway processes and systems in the Gotthard Base Tunnel to be tested."
Under the Ceneri, more than 60 percent of the around 40-kilometres-long tunnel system has already been excavated. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. is confident that the Ceneri Base Tunnel will be ready for operation with scheduled services in 2019.
New annual film
That work on the Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels is progressing well is also demonstrated in the annual film for 2012. Throughout the year, the film crew accompanied the work on the AlpTransit construction sites. In addition to laying the ballastless track in the tunnel, the overground section Altdorf/Rynächt was entirely rebuilt. The roads, underpasses and dual-track railway line went into operation punctually. In the Ceneri Base Tunnel, the miners at Sigirino blasted on four drives simultaneously. Work on the inner lining of the south portal at Vezia was completed.
The result is an approximately 30-minute film which documents the progress in impressive images.
