NRLA – Construction Site Open day at Sigirino

The Construction Site Open Day at Sigirino on Saturday, September 20, 2014, once again attracted many interested visitors. Around 6,500 people obtained on-site information about the state of work on the Ceneri Base Tunnel.

Thanks to the sunny autumn day, sizeable numbers already arrived in the morning: 6,500 people from all over Switzerland and Lombardy visited the AlpTransit construction site at Sigirino.

Also this year, the main attraction was the visit to the cavern system (CAOP), which is the central logistical point for work on the Ceneri Base Tunnel. Although it will still be some considerable time until it is possible to travel the through the 15.4-kilometres-long Ceneri Base Tunnel by rail, at the Construction Site Open Day, all visitors had the opportunity to enjoy a trip through part of the tunnel on a wheeled train.

At various information stands, the responsible representatives of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd, the local construction management team and the construction consortium provided information. Children especially enjoyed the opportunity for supervised operation of construction-site machines to move gravel and soil.
