Today, Thursday, December 16, 2010, AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. and the MPC Consortium signed the work contract for construction of the Lugano-Bellinzona viaduct at Nodo di Camorino.
Member companies of the MPC consortium are Muttoni, Pizzarotti AG and CSC AG. The contract value for Construction Lot 781 is around 40 million Swiss francs. Execution work will start in January 2011 and finish in 2014.
"The Lugano-Bellinzona railway viaduct at Camorino is one of the most important civil engineering works in the Nodo di Camorino section of the Ceneri Base Tunnel", explained Walter Bernardi, Head of Tunnel and Trackbed Construction Ceneri of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., at the contract signing. The approximately 1-kilometre-long concrete construction will be executed about 10 metres above the ground with special V-shaped columns.
The Nodo di Camorino section is by the north portal of the Ceneri Base Tunnel. Various complex civil engineering works for the railway and road infrastructure are being constructed here.
Ceneri Base Tunnel
The Ceneri Base Tunnel, with a length of 15.4 km between the north portal at Vigana, near Camorino, and the south portal at Vezia is Switzerland’s third-largest tunnel project after the Gotthard and Lötschberg Base Tunnels. Only with the Ceneri Base Tunnel as the continuation and extension of the Gotthard Base Tunnel will the new Gotthard line become a continuous flat route for freight traffic through Switzerland. In passenger traffic, journey times between the German-speaking part of Switzerland, the Ticino and Italy will be radically shortened. Commercial operation of the Ceneri Base Tunnel with scheduled train services is planned to start at the end of 2019.
